Trading notes: A roof-raising gospel revival, dancing divas in motorized scooters and even a parade of pooches helped make the 26th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition a memorable spectacle celebrating the incredible generosity and creativity of the theatre community and all Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS supporters. This year’s Easter Bonnet Competition raised $3,677,855, the result of six weeks of intensive fundraising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS by 51 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies.

Master's notes: Decent stage shot of the new tour. Mild washout during brightly lit scenes (first and last songs are the worst of it). Toward the end of act one there are some focus issues lasting under 5 minutes total. Act two is a bit mis-aimed and sometimes people are out of frame for a minute. I...kind of thought the show was over after Santa's sleigh flew and stopped filming, so Santa's little epilogue is missing. But video picks up again right before the final song/tap number.

Master's notes: Act 2 only. The very final moment of Lucheni is not recorded (last 5ish seconds). It’s not the best video, but it’s decently watchable. Don’t set your expectations too high, it’s a blind shot phone boot. Pia Douwes is still incredible as Elisabeth, Milan van Waardenburg is fantastic (to no one’s surprise), William Spaaij is a freak as Lucheni - in the most positive way.

Trading notes: The production of An Enemy of the People for NET Playhouse aired on December 2, 1966. This version used the 1950 adaptation by Arthur Miller (originally from Henrik Ibsen), which Miller had famously written as a critique of McCarthyism. In her bid to become the country’s leader, Home Secretary Asiya Rao prepares to make a major policy announcement that will establish her as the front-runner of the political race. Alongside her cut-throat and calculating advisor Phoebe, she embarks on a publicity stunt starting with a photo shoot by the white cliffs of Dover. But rather than the tide washing her reputation clean, something else washes up…

Trading notes: Lovely capture of this whimsical show. Act One is a phone stageshot with no zooms while Act Two was filmed on a camcorder. Both acts have occasional wandering, with the railing cutting off the feet of the actors, but almost all of the action is captured. Includes a hilarious mishap with Jason's costume falling apart upon his entrance, and the actors breaking character as Jason went backstage and came back without the wings for the rest of the show. Includes curtain call.

Trading notes: Filmed sometime in January-February. There are at least two versions, 2.98 GB and 4.09 GB. The 2.98 GB DVD has better video and audio, and runs a few seconds longer (2:11:34 compared to 2:11:08). The subtitles are for the 2.98 GB version. The SRT subtitles contain speaker names, which are sometimes heavily abbreviated out of reading speed considerations. In an attempt to alleviate this, the ASS subtitles have the speaker names replaced with emoji. Also, in extreme cases, there are as many as four speakers per subtitle, since it just can't be helped sometimes.

Master's notes: Solid capture of this very interesting staging of this musical theater masterpiece. Filmed during previews. Shot in a great mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, with a bigger focus on wides here due to the ensemble nature of the piece. The first 2 minutes of act 1 are audio only and there are a good few dropouts that don't last too long and peter off as the video goes on. Large amount of wandering, shaking, and re-adjusting throughout. Overall a great capture only really marred by dropouts and readjustments.

Master's notes: Roughly an hour of 4K highlights from Act 1 of this show. Video starts near the end of Tradition and ends shortly after Tevye's Dream. Most of the footage between those songs is there, but there are a few blackouts throughout. Audio of Act 1 is complete. Had an annoying neighbor who couldn't decide whether to look suspiciously at me, be on her phone, or talk full volume to her neighbor. She can be heard sometimes in the audio. No obstructions. Mostly wides and mediums, often blindshot, with some closeups mixed in. Audio fed from external source. Worth the watch for fans of this show, the cast and staging were wonderful.

Trading notes: Pretty poorly captured, but few recordings exist of this absolutely incredible cast, and it's the full show. Not framed well, 2nd act extremely washed out. Some coverup at the beginning of Act 2 when the video didn't record.

Trading notes: 1982 adaptation of the play that aired on American Playhouse on PBS. Released on DVD as part of the Broadway Theatre Archive project.

Master's notes: Solid up-close stageshot of this production of Frankenstein! Shot from front row so no obstruction. First 5 minutes or so are shaky but the rest of the video is smooth once I got myself situated. This video only captures the right side of the stage - action at the center stage is cut off at best and action on the left side of the stage is completely missed. For this production, all the actors have a facilitor them in order to help guide them through their performances (be it help with lines, blocking, or etc). The presence of this facilitator helped make putting on the performance more accessible for the cast, all of whom are disabled. A.B.L.E. Ensemble very much focuses on making theatre more accessible for folx with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. It's a cool initiative and this performance definitely broadened my view on what accessibility can look like. TLDR: Punk rock Frankenstein, hell ya! Grade: C

Trading notes: Excellent HD capture of the new musical on tour, based on the Disney film. Such a fun show with great music and cast. Heidi is at the top of her game and a rare master comedic actress with matching voice! She really knocked the role outta the park, as did Emma!

There is a bit of washout, especially in wider shots. There is some minor head obstruction on the left, but it only affects Small Alison and Bruce's entrances at the beginning of the show; after that the heads are rarely noticeable. Master's notes: Fantastic capture of this world premiere musical! Shot around a head that obstructs some of the bottom right of the stage, it doesn't obscure much and is worked around pretty well. My backpack also sometimes obscures some of the bottom of the stage during the first act, but you don't miss any action from that. Some increased wandering, shaking, and re-adjusting throughout. Shot in a wonderful mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups throughout. Raul is on absolute fire in this performance, as are his supporting cast who turn in some wonderful performances. I can't wait to see where this show goes next.

Master's notes: Pretty good capture of the ART's production of Gatsby: An American Myth. Due to a camera battery error, there is a roughly 4 minute blackout at 00:02:23 where I replaced the sound with audio from my June 2024 audio until I was able to get my camera filming again. Apart from that, decent capture with a lot of zooms and pretty good audio quality. Part of the right half of the stage is blocked by a head but I managed to film around it pretty well apart from a few spots.

Master's notes: This is a production of Stephen Schwartz's Godspell I recently conducted and played keyboard for. The songs are so well written and catchy in this show and I had a great time playing! This version of the show used a 4 piece band plus actor/musicians too.

Trading notes: West End stars united for this special Godspell 50th Anniversary online concert, which streamed worldwide for three days only. This production raised money for charities including the Hope Mill (A Factory of Creativity CIO), Acting For Others, and National AIDS Trust. Each performer was completely self-isolated and brought together by technology.

Trading notes: The Great Gatsby is a timeless tale of love and tragedy set in the Jazz Age of New York. Gatsby, a self made millionaire pursues a former lover, Daisy and his pursuit meets with a tragic end. This adaptation draws the audience’s attention to themes of equity and privilege, and showcases Daisy’s strength and character. Crafted from the beloved novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, this show is a World Premiere performance by Portland playwright Maeve Z O’Connor.

Trading notes: A fascinating and rarely performed musical that deserves all the accolades it receives. The whole cast is strong, but Rachel is particularly fantastic in her dual role as both “Big” and “Little” Edie. This is captured perfectly with no blackouts, no obstruction, and no washout. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. 2 discs.

Trading notes: GRINDR The Opera puts the most notorious gay hook-up app into the exaggerated world of opera. With musical styles ranging from baroque to contemporary pop, GRINDR The Opera is a daring, humorous look at the changing landscape of gay relationships, and the greatest catalyst for the shift: GRINDR. Though the opera lives in the world of parody, it touches on some very serious, hot-button issues that exist in the gay community as it transitions into a time of wider acceptance and easy access to opportunities of both romance and lust to be sated.

Trading notes: This is the first preview where the set broke down after about 15 minutes and the rest of the show was performed concert style. All announcements (both over the speakers and onstage with the director/cast) are included in the video. In Act 2 Overture, The music stops for a second and then restarts. During the mid finale scene which is before when Phil runs around town doing “errands”, Matthew Warchus comes out and informs everyone that they will skip scenes due to the tech issue and just go to the scene of the song where Phil and Rita have their dance and from there.
